Kura Card: Non-Custodial Spending Explained

How self-custody and card spending work together to let you spend crypto without giving up control.

Kura Team

A crypto debit card sounds simple until you ask the important question: who actually holds your money?

With most crypto cards, the answer is the card issuer — your assets are custodied, converted, and pooled before you ever tap to pay. Kura Card takes a different path.

Self-custody meets Visa

Kura Card connects your Kura Wallet (Safe smart account on Base) to the Visa network — spending is authorized against your on-chain balance rather than a custodial exchange account.

Here's the flow at a high level:

  1. You hold stablecoins or supported assets in your Kura Wallet (Safe smart account on Base)
  2. When you pay with Kura Card, the required amount is authorized against your on-chain balance
  3. The merchant receives a normal Visa settlement — you keep self-custody until the moment of spend

Kura never pools user funds into a company-owned account. Your assets remain in wallets you control via Privy MPC key management.

Why this matters

Counterparty risk — If a custodial card provider freezes accounts or enters bankruptcy, your spending balance may be tied up in their estate. Self-custody spending limits that exposure to the transaction itself.

Transparency — You can verify your on-chain balance independently. No "trust our dashboard" required.

Alignment — Kura's business model isn't built on rehypothecating your deposits. We earn through subscriptions (see pricing) and disclosed partner integrations — not by holding your money.

Getting your card

Card issuance requires identity verification through regulated card partners — standard KYC for any Visa product. Once approved, you manage limits, freeze/unfreeze, and view activity inside the Kura app.

Supported regions and asset types may vary. Check the app for current availability in your country.

Pair with TrackFi

Use Kura Card for spending and TrackFi for the full picture — link traditional bank accounts alongside your on-chain activity so you always know what's going out, no matter which rail it rides on.
